Trump says US will not attack Iran before midterm elections

The statement came amid indirect talks over the Strait of Hormuz and new sanctions on Iran’s shadow fleet.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on October 8 that Washington will not launch an attack on Iran before the November 3, 2026 midterm elections. The comment was framed as a "productive" diplomatic opening, though Trump stressed it does not constitute a peace deal.

Trump’s declaration coincided with ongoing indirect negotiations led by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, with Qatar acting as mediator. Both sides have exchanged proposals aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil‑shipping lane. Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal, while Tehran said it was reviewing a U.S. counter‑proposal.

The nuclear dispute remains unresolved; the United States seeks meaningful limits on Iran’s programme, and Tehran insists it will not abandon uranium enrichment or surrender its stockpile.

On the same day, the U.S. Treasury Department announced fresh sanctions under the "Operation Economic Outcast" campaign, targeting individuals, front companies and 17 tankers that form Iran’s shadow fleet. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the measures "effectively neutralise the vast majority of Iran’s remaining shadow fleet network," aiming to cut maritime channels used to evade sanctions.
