Trump says US officials met Iran mediators in New York

Trump confirmed talks with Iran mediators on Monday, as Iran's foreign minister scheduled a separate meeting in New York.

President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday that American officials had met with mediators on Iran, according to Al Jazeera. He did not provide details of the discussion.

Iranian state media cited by Al Jazeera said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was also set to meet mediators in New York that morning to discuss recent proposals on the Strait of Hormuz. An ISNA report added that no US representative would attend the Iranian delegation’s meeting.

The meeting follows a Qatari delegation’s presentation of an Iranian proposal to the United States last week, linking the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to US easing of military pressure. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz rejected the proposal on Sunday, saying Tehran sought sanctions relief and access to frozen assets before nuclear talks.

Araghchi disputed Waltz’s account, stating the US ambassador had not seen the plan and emphasizing Iran’s readiness for diplomacy while also preparing for possible renewed hostilities.
