Rohit Prasad, ex‑Amazon AI chief, appointed CEO of Boston Dynamics

The former Amazon senior VP will lead the Hyundai‑owned robot maker as it moves from viral demos to large‑scale manufacturing.

Boston Dynamics announced on Tuesday that Rohit Prasad, a former senior vice president and head scientist for AI and Alexa at Amazon, will become its chief executive starting Wednesday.

Prasad, whose background is in artificial intelligence rather than robotics, is expected to steer the Hyundai‑owned company through a transition from creating viral robot videos to manufacturing humanoid robots at scale. The firm has previously said it aims to produce 30,000 Atlas units by 2028, with 25,000 destined for use in Hyundai and Kia factories and 5,000 for retail.

Boston Dynamics’ press release highlighted the concept of “physical AI,” and Prasad said, “Boston Dynamics is uniquely positioned to advance Physical AI through its world‑class robotics expertise.”

The company earlier this year showcased a spectacular humanoid performance at CES and reported making only four Atlas robots per month in May, according to a Semafor report. Estimates from the Korea Herald place the current cost of an Atlas unit at $130,000‑$140,000, with projected reductions to $30,000 after 50,000 units are built.
