At the Iberseries & Platino Industria conference in Madrid, Amazon MGM executives Javiera Balmaceda and Nicole Morganti outlined how the streamer selects non‑English language projects, citing the Spanish espionage series “Zeta” and the Mexican action drama “Venganza” as recent examples.
Balmaceda, head of international originals for Latin America, Canada and Australia, said “Venganza” required convincing Amazon that a Mexican production could deliver the scale audiences expect from action. Morganti, Prime Video head of international originals for Italy and Southern Europe, noted that “Zeta,” starring Mario Casas and produced by Fonte Films, was meant to prove Spain could create a big‑budget action film with a distinct Spanish identity.
Both executives emphasized that internal approval hinges on demonstrating strong directors, talent and production capabilities. They added that Amazon’s international teams regularly share scripts, casting ideas and talent across borders. Morganti also highlighted the growing market for Spanish‑language horror, while Balmaceda said successful titles naturally lead to sequels or franchises when audience demand emerges.
For creators pitching Amazon, the executives advised focusing on original ideas, clear points of view and genuine belief in the story’s relevance.
