Ben Affleck told GQ in an interview published Tuesday that the deaths of his father Timothy in April and his mother Chris in June of this year have prompted a deep reassessment of his priorities.

Affleck, 54, described the experience as “a big year of life,” adding that the rapid succession of loss made him confront his own mortality, his relationship with his children, and the fleeting nature of existence. “You appreciate your parents in different ways, and you think about your own mortality and your own life and your own children and what you want to do with it,” he said, according to the New York Post.

He reflected that the “bare fact of the very fleeting nature of all of our lives kind of stares you back in the face,” noting that his earlier belief he would have “so much time” has faded. The actor also observed that “often the end of life isn’t full of wisdom and resolve,” and that unresolved issues tend to remain “unfixed.”

When asked about his mother, Affleck called Chris “pretty extraordinary and brave,” and said her death deepened his appreciation for her life. He also described his parents as “lucky” for living longer than expected, a sentiment he shared while discussing how the losses have reshaped his outlook.

Affleck did not detail specific plans for the future, but he emphasized that his three children – Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Sam, 14 – are his main priority. He shares the children with ex‑wife Jennifer Garner, and he said his recent reflections have reinforced his desire to spend more time with them.
