MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital media literacy, announced on Oct. 15 that Cameron Bailey, chief executive officer of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), will receive its inaugural Champion of Digital Media Literacy Award. The honour will be presented at MediaSmarts’ 30th‑anniversary celebration in Ottawa on Oct. 28, during the national Media Literacy Week (Oct. 26‑30).

The award was created to mark MediaSmarts’ three‑decade milestone and to recognise an individual whose work has inspired critical thinking, creativity and meaningful engagement with media. MediaSmarts executive director Kathryn Ann Hill said, “Media literacy is about understanding how media shapes the way we see ourselves, each other and the world around us. Throughout his career, Cameron Bailey has championed stories and perspectives that invite audiences to think more deeply, question assumptions and connect across cultures.”

Bailey’s career began as a film critic before he joined TIFF as a programmer, curating Canadian, African and South Asian cinema. He later rose to CEO of the festival, which MediaSmarts describes as “the world’s largest public film festival and one of Canada’s leading cultural brands.” Under his leadership, TIFF has expanded space for diverse and under‑represented filmmakers, broadening the range of perspectives seen on screen.

The award aligns with MediaSmarts’ evolving focus since its founding in 1996, moving from early education on advertising and internet safety to current challenges such as algorithmic bias, deepfakes, online hate and misinformation. Bailey’s contributions to Canadian arts have been recognised with several honours, including the Order of Ontario (2026), the inaugural Michael D. Eisner Arts and Culture Fellowship at the Aspen Institute, France’s Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters, and the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

Media Literacy Week, a national event running Oct. 26‑30, will feature activities in classrooms, libraries, museums and community groups across Canada, aiming to promote digital media literacy ahead of the award ceremony.
