HBO confirmed that Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will headline the fifth season of the anthology series True Detective, with production slated to begin in 2027.

What happened

The network announced that Cage will portray Henry Logan and Banderas will play Rai García. Filming is scheduled to start in 2027, and the season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. The series was picked up for a fifth season in February 2024, following the fourth season “Night Country,” which aired in 2025.

What the reports add

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Cage first hinted at a possible return during a New York Comic Con panel last week, while Variety detailed the full list of executive producers, including both leads and longtime series creator Nic Pizzolatto. Variety also cited HBO’s claim that Season 4 was the most‑watched installment with 12.7 million cross‑platform viewers.

What was said

At New York Comic Con, Cage said, “Because you can only do so many movies back to back to act… I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. No direct quotes from Banderas or HBO were provided in the two outlets.

How it came about

HBO renewed True Detective for a fifth season shortly after the fourth season concluded, as covered in Felo’s earlier piece Nicolas Cage hints at True Detective return at NY Comic Con. Showrunner Issa López, who directed the Alaska‑set fourth season, will again serve as writer, director, and executive producer for the new installment.
