Nearly three months after the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) directed Madurai district officials to provide basic amenities to 340 families in the Theerthakadu Dalit settlement, only 68 families have received land pattas, according to a New Indian Express report dated 7 Oct 2026.

The NCSC issued a second notice on 2 July to Collector Nishanth Krishna after a March notice went unimplemented. Officials from the Adi Dravidar Welfare and Revenue departments surveyed the hamlet, and the Revenue Department’s District Revenue Officer Anbalagan said pattas would be issued soon.

Senior Adi Dravidar Welfare officials confirmed that 68 families have been allotted e‑pattas for 1.25 cents each, while the remaining families await allocation. M Thangapandian, a representative of the Theerthakadu SC Residents Protection Welfare Association, said that issuing pattas would enable electricity, drinking water and sanitation services for the settlement, which has housed more than 600 people since 1982.
