Toyota’s U.S. sales lean heavily on hybrids as EV market stalls

Toyota’s hybrid‑focused lineup accounted for more than half of its U.S. sales in the September quarter as overall electric‑vehicle demand drops.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Toyota and Lexus sold 633,223 vehicles in the United States during the three months ending September, according to the automaker’s third‑quarter report, Gizmodo said. Of those, 363,367 units – 57% – were classified as “electrified,” a category that includes hybrids, plug‑in hybrids, battery‑electric and fuel‑cell models.

What happened

Within the Toyota brand alone, 325,227 of 540,167 vehicles sold were electrified, pushing the share just above 60% for the quarter. The company’s overall electrified‑vehicle sales rose 29% year over year.

What the reports add

Gizmodo noted that the rise in Toyota’s electrified sales came as overall U.S. EV sales slumped 46.9% year over year in August, to 78,895 units, based on Cox Automotive data. The outlet also highlighted that Toyota was the second‑largest EV seller in August, behind Tesla.

What was said

The article referenced former Ford CEO Jim Farley’s warning that the expiration of federal EV subsidies in September 2025 could cut demand for electric cars in half, a comment made at the time of the policy change.

How it came about

Gizmodo linked the slowdown to the Trump administration’s decision to let the federal EV tax credit expire and to roll back emissions regulations in September 2025, which prompted a rush of purchases before the deadline and left a weaker market thereafter. Higher gasoline prices have recently nudged consumers toward hybrids, bolstering Toyota’s sales.
