Talking Heads’ seminal third album Fear of Music will be issued as a three‑CD super‑deluxe edition on November 13, according to Pitchfork.
What happened
The Rhino‑released box set compiles a newly remastered version of the 1979 record, a selection of alternate track versions, studio outtakes and two previously unreleased full‑concert recordings from that year. The live discs feature the band’s Boston performance at the Berklee Performing Arts Center on August 24, 1979, and a show at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey on November 17, 1979. An accompanying Blu‑Ray contains footage from the band’s appearance on the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test, including a performance of “Life During Wartime.”
What the reports add
Pitchfork notes that the physical package also includes a 60‑page photo book with liner notes by music writer Will Hermes. The release coincides with a new dedicated Talking Heads channel on SiriusXM Radio and follows Rhino’s March archival collection Tentative Decisions: Demos & Live, which gathered early recordings from 1975‑1977.
What was said
Pitchfork’s associate staff writer Hattie Lindert reports the details of the set but does not quote any band members or label representatives.
How it came about
The super‑deluxe follows Rhino’s earlier archival project earlier this year, expanding the label’s effort to reissue Talking Heads material. The inclusion of the BBC footage and the photo book aims to provide a comprehensive look at the band’s 1979 era.
