Rwanda poised to host first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Africa

Negotiations between Rwanda and Formula 1 officials could see the sport return to Africa for the first time since 1993.

Rwanda is nearing a deal to host a permanent Formula 1 Grand Prix, potentially becoming the continent’s first host since the 1993 South African race, according to the Independent.

What happened

Plans are under way to build a purpose‑built circuit about 40 km outside Kigali. The government announced its intention to bid during the FIA prize‑giving gala in 2024, and discussions with F1 stakeholders are ongoing, with an official announcement expected soon. Reports suggest a race would not take place before 2030.

What the reports add

The Independent notes that while South Africa’s Kyalami and Cape Town have shown interest, Rwanda appears to have moved ahead. It also lists other African nations – Morocco and Nigeria – and Asian markets such as South Korea and India, as potential future venues.

What was said

Lewis Hamilton, speaking at the Australian Grand Prix in March, praised Rwanda as “particularly stunning” and said he has been lobbying for an African Grand Prix for six‑seven years. F1 boss Stefano Domenicali has previously said the sport is eyeing a return to Africa despite a packed 2027 calendar.
