Comic Con Africa ranks as the world's fourth‑largest pop‑culture convention

RX Africa caps ticket sales at 20,000 per day to manage growth and safety.

South Africa's Comic Con Africa 2026, held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (Nasrec) from 24 to 27 September, attracted roughly 80,000 attendees, placing it behind only Brazil, San Diego and New York as the fourth‑largest comic‑con globally, according to MD Carol Weaving of RX Africa.

Weaving explained that the event caps daily ticket sales at 20,000 to avoid overcrowding, a shift from earlier editions that exceeded venue capacity at Kyalami and Gallagher Estate. The four‑day show features three revenue streams – ticket sales, sponsorships and exhibition space – with brands such as Telkom, Red Bull and Kellogg’s operating experiential booths.

She noted a growing trend of sponsors working directly with local content creators and live‑streamers rather than traditional advertising agencies, saying creators are "effectively replacing traditional ad agencies for brands at the show."
