Pakistan has been selected to chair the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in 2027, announced during the annual meetings in Bangkok on 16 October, according to dailytimes.com.pk.
Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema was named the incoming chair, marking the country's return to the role after a 74‑year gap; the last time Pakistan held the position was in 1953. Cheema serves as Pakistan’s governor to the World Bank, while the State Bank of Pakistan governor represents the country on the IMF Board of Governors.
The chairmanship is largely procedural and diplomatic, involving organising meetings, setting speaker order and communicating proceedings, but it does not confer additional voting rights or preferential loan access. Operational decisions remain with the institutions’ Executive Boards.
