Pakistan to launch new electricity and gas subsidy scheme in 2027
The scheme aims to replace existing slabs, improve transparency and meet IMF conditions.

Pakistan plans to introduce a new electricity and gas subsidy system for verified low‑income households, with the electricity component starting in January 2027 and the gas component on 1 July 2027, according to dailytimes.com.pk.
The government will phase out the current tariff‑differential and cross‑subsidy arrangements and link assistance to a dedicated socio‑economic registry being built with World Bank support. Officials expect to finish registering eligible consumers by November 2026 and will verify data before connecting it to the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) database.
The reforms are presented as a way to meet International Monetary Fund conditions, curb the energy sector’s circular debt and make subsidy distribution more transparent. Earlier this week, Felo reported that the income‑based subsidy plan could raise electricity tariffs by up to Rs7 per unit for some users.
