Karan Johar announced that the ninth season of his celebrity talk show Koffee With Karan will be its final installment, with a premiere set for October 14, 2026 on JioHotstar, according to india.com and Variety.
What happened
The filmmaker‑host shared an emotional video reflecting on the show's 22‑year history and confirmed that season 9 will mark the end of the series. The season will be streamed exclusively on JioHotstar, the platform that has carried the show since its sixth season.
What the reports add
- India.com noted that Johar looked back at his original idea for the show, first pitched to his father Yash Johar in 2004, and recalled the first day of shooting on August 16, 2004. The outlet also mentioned that the show has produced eight seasons, 161 episodes, and 22 years of content.
- Variety added that Johar said he wants to devote the next decade to directing movies and telling more stories, and that the decision to end the show was “emotional and personal.” The article listed the original 2004 guests—Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol—and highlighted past notable moments, such as the 2019 Season 6 episode featuring cricketers Hardik Pandya and K. L. Rahul that sparked controversy.
- Variety reported that Season 7 was produced by Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment after taking over from SOL India, and that Season 8 opened in October 2023 with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.
- The Variety piece also explained that Disney+ Hotstar merged with JioCinema in February 2025 to become JioHotstar, the current home of the show.
- Alok Jain of JioStar said, “‘Koffee With Karan’ is the talk show that brought the biggest celebrities into viewers’ living rooms and built a fandom that very few shows have matched… For over two decades, it has given audiences an intimate, irreverent and often unexpected glimpse into the lives of the people they love watching, becoming a part of pop culture phenomenon.”
What was said
Karan Johar told Variety, “I still can’t believe it’s been 22 years and now this will be my ninth season,” and added, “I want to spend the next decade of my life directing more movies… so with a heavy heart I am making this season my last.”
India.com reported Johar saying, “There are some journeys you don’t plan to end, you simply know, somewhere deep within you, when it is time to let them go. Koffee With Karan has been an extraordinary part of my life.”
In the same video, Johar recalled, “It was June 2004 when I told my dad that I really wanted to host a talk show… He passed away that same month, actually. On 26 June. The very first day I shot for it was 16 August 2004.”
How it came about
The show debuted on Star World in 2004 with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as its first guests, later adding Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, and Aishwarya Rai with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It ran for six seasons on Star World through 2019, with a simulcast on Star One for its second season in 2007. By its sixth season, episodes also streamed on Hotstar, which later rebranded to JioHotstar after Disney+ Hotstar merged with JioCinema in February 2025. Over its run, the program has featured top Indian stars such as Kareena Kapoor, Kajol, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, and has become a cultural touchstone for viral moments and celebrity revelations. In January 2019, a Season 6 episode with cricketers Hardik Pandya and K. L. Rahul sparked an uproar, leading Hotstar to remove the episode and the BCCI to issue show‑cause notices to the players. In 2022, Johar clarified that the show was moving from television to a streaming‑exclusive format, and his production company Dharmatic took over from SOL India for Season 7, which launched in July 2022. Season 8 opened in October 2023, and the upcoming ninth season will be the final chapter of the series.
