Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani FIRed for obstructing police in Gujarat

The FIR alleges unlawful assembly, rioting and intimidation at Pethapur police station on Oct. 8.

According to a police complaint filed on Oct. 11, an FIR has been registered against Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani and seven others for allegedly obstructing Police Inspector A.M. Desai at Pethapur police station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The incident is said to have occurred on Oct. 8, when Congress candidate Yunus Parmar was summoned for questioning after a complaint that he and his associates threatened BJP campaigner Bhavesh Bhavsar at Sanjari Park. While Desai was recording Parmar’s statement, Mevani and the accused reportedly formed an unlawful assembly, entered the writer’s room, used abusive language, created a commotion and prevented the recording of the statement.

The FIR alleges the group also raised slogans referencing the Thakor community, circulated video of the episode on social media to stir communal tension, and violated a notification issued by the Additional District Magistrate, Gandhinagar. Charges include unlawful assembly, rioting, obstruction of a public servant, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace. No arrests were made at the time of filing.

The Police Station Officer confirmed the FIR was lodged on the same day voting was held for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections, but did not comment on any further action.
