An 80‑year‑old man was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital in critical condition after his Hyundai Accent was hit during a police pursuit on South Street in Leeming, Perth, on Monday morning, SMH reported.
Police were chasing a stolen vehicle that had been tracked from a house in White Gum Valley at about 3 am, then sighted on Albany Highway at 10:35 am. The stolen car failed to stop at an intersection on Beasley Road, prompting a high‑speed pursuit through Kenwick, Langford, Canning Vale and Leeming. At around 11 am the police car collided with the civilian vehicle, ejecting the latter’s engine onto the roadside and embedding a street sign in one of the cars.
Both officers – a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s – were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital as a precaution. The stolen‑vehicle driver, a 27‑year‑old, was later arrested after fleeing on foot from a caravan park in Coogee.
