A 27‑year‑old constable, Dinesh Kumar, died after a speeding car driven by an alleged drunk driver struck him while he was investigating an earlier road accident on the Thiruporur‑Chengalpattu road at about 10 pm on Saturday, New Indian Express reported.
The police team, including head constable Suresh, had arrived to examine a prior crash in which a vehicle hit an electric pole but caused no serious injuries. While on the scene, another vehicle travelling from Thiruporur to Hanumanthapuram allegedly ran into the officers and a bystander, who were then taken to Chengalpattu General Hospital.
Medical tests confirmed the three arrested suspects – Dhinakaran (34), Abinesh (27) and Arun Kumar (29) – were intoxicated. Dhinakaran, who runs a fish stall, was driving his brother’s car.
