New South Wales police said an 18‑year‑old rugby league fan lost control of his car and drove into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters in Newcastle on Saturday, injuring ten people, including a five‑year‑old girl and a 67‑year‑old man who were in critical condition.
Lord Mayor Gavin Morris told ABC the driver was revving the car in excitement before the loss of control, and police have taken him into custody. The incident occurred as fans gathered to farewell the Knights ahead of their grand final against the Sydney Roosters.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed sympathy on social media, saying his thoughts were with those injured and noting that rugby league should bring people together.
