Jamie Carragher avoids bankruptcy after settling tax debt

Judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed the bankruptcy petition after HMRC confirmed the unpaid tax bill had been settled.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher will not be made bankrupt after a judge dismissed a petition against him at the Insolvency and Companies Court in London on Tuesday. Judge Nicholas Briggs was told by HMRC’s Kevin Hassan that the outstanding tax debt had been paid, leading to the petition’s dismissal.

The petition, filed in August, concerned an unpaid tax bill owed to HM Revenue and Customs. Bankruptcy proceedings can be initiated over unpaid debts, but a petition does not itself declare a person bankrupt; it merely starts the legal process. In Carragher’s case, the court was informed the debt was settled before the hearing concluded, prompting the dismissal.

Carragher, 48, retired from professional football in 2013 and has since become a prominent football pundit on Sky Sports and CBS Sports.
