FBR tells officials to stop advance tax notices for pure‑salary earners
The directive, issued by FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial, aims to ease the tax burden on salaried households.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has instructed tax officials to cease issuing advance income‑tax notices to individuals whose sole earnings come from salaries, Daily Times reported on Oct. 10.
According to the outlet, Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial gave the order to reduce pressure on salaried taxpayers who had been receiving quarterly advance‑tax demands. The rule does not cover those who earn additional income from other sources, who may still face adjustable advance tax under existing regulations.
The FBR said any tax collected from eligible salary‑only earners will be adjusted against their final liability, though it has not announced a blanket exemption for all salaried workers.
Former finance minister Asad Umar, cited in the article, claimed salaried individuals paid over Rs600 billion in taxes last year, far more than landlords, whose contribution he said was under Rs10 billion. He also criticised the rising petroleum levy, saying it had jumped from Rs50 to Rs117 per litre and generated about Rs1.6 trillion in the previous year.
