Hyundai announced a new version of its best‑selling Tucson SUV that combines a plug‑in hybrid powertrain with a more spacious, premium interior. The model, revealed on 1 October 2026, targets a 50‑mile electric‑only range and features a 1.6‑litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a battery and electric motor.

What happened

The updated Tucson measures 4,560 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall – 35 mm longer, 35 mm wider and 20 mm taller than the previous generation. Its wheelbase grew by 40 mm to 2,720 mm, creating more cabin space. Rear doors now open to an 83‑degree angle (up from 73 degrees), and the rear seats slide 150 mm and fold in a 40:20:40 split, giving a maximum boot capacity of 695 litres. Hyundai quotes a 50‑mile electric‑only range for the plug‑in hybrid version.

What the reports add

The Independent notes that the new Tucson’s front lighting combines an illuminated central strip with vertical LED daytime running lights, while the rear features a three‑dimensional LED pattern. The headlights can control beams with 25,600 individual LED pixels and display welcome and farewell animations. New paint options include Moonlake Blue, Rich Walnut and Ignite Red, each offered in metallic or matte finishes. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 20 inches.

What was said

"We could have played it safe and simply evolved a successful model. But that is not Hyundai’s style," said Xavier Martinet, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe, as reported by the Independent.

How it came about

Hyundai’s move follows a broader industry trend toward larger, more luxurious SUVs that blend electrification with premium cabin technology. The company emphasises a balance between touchscreen controls and physical buttons, with a 12.9‑ or 17‑inch main touchscreen, a separate 9.9‑inch driver display, and an optional head‑up display projecting key information onto the windscreen.
