A toddler retrieved a loaded pistol from a backpack at a daycare in Canton, Michigan on Monday, prompting swift action by staff and an investigation that led to the arrest of a police officer who is the child’s parent, officials said.
Police Chief Joseph Bialy told a news conference that the child’s parent, an officer from a nearby jurisdiction, was taken into custody and that the firearm was not a service weapon. Bialy described the video of the incident as “shocking” and emphasized that no one was injured.
The chief praised the daycare staff for intervening quickly, noting that a teacher remained in the room, identified the situation, and secured the children. He said the centre will tighten its protocols, including searching all backpacks.
“I don’t think there was any ill intent by truly anyone involved,” the chief said, adding that the incident highlights the need for secure firearm storage.
