Researchers map two hidden disorder types in twisted MoSe2/WSe2 semiconductors
A mathematical approach identifies smooth background disorder and localized trap sites in twisted two‑dimensional semiconductor layers.
By Felo News Desk · Published
A study of a twisted MoSe2/WSe2 moiré heterostructure shows that photoluminescence varies across the material as excitons respond to two distinct, previously hidden forms of disorder, according to scitechdaily.com.
What happened
The researchers examined spatial variations in photoluminescence spectra of the heterostructure, noting that the complex, overlapping emission peaks change from point to point. By analysing simple spectral properties such as peak energy and average emission energy across the sample, they identified two disorder components.
What the reports add
The first component is a smoothly varying “background” that extends over distances of a few micrometres. The second is a highly localized disorder associated with tiny defects or trap‑like sites where excitons become confined.
What was said
The framework was developed by Katsunori Wakabayashi at the Research Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA), part of the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). The study suggests the method could provide a more reliable way to investigate imperfections in materials used for advanced optical and quantum devices.
How it came about
Twisted two‑dimensional semiconductors form moiré patterns when stacked with a slight rotational misalignment, creating complex photoluminescence spectra that are difficult to analyse by traditional peak‑assignment techniques. Wakabayashi’s approach sidesteps this challenge by focusing on spatial spectral trends rather than separating individual peaks.
