Gentoo to replace phpBB forums with Discourse and AI‑driven content import
The Gentoo project will switch its community forums to Discourse and employ AI to recreate historic threads.
By Felo News Desk · Published
Gentoo announced that its community forums will migrate from phpBB to Discourse, citing the long‑standing maintenance challenges of phpBB and the desire for a more modern platform. The move will be accompanied by AI tools that scrape archived copies of the old forums and repost them in the new Discourse site, allowing new users to see historic discussions alongside fresh content for several years. Gentoo noted that importing the existing posts directly is unlikely, so the AI‑generated recreation will serve as a clean‑slate start while preserving past material. Light theming will make the new interface resemble the classic phpBB look to ease the transition.
