Gentoo releases experimental GNU/Hurd port

Gentoo's team provides a pre‑built GNU/Hurd image for QEMU and outlines future goals for the project.

Gentoo announced an experimental port of its distribution to the GNU/Hurd kernel, offering a pre‑built disk image that can be run via QEMU. The announcement, posted on 1 April 2026, includes download links for the image and its signature, verification instructions, and a QEMU command line to start the system with 2 GB RAM and SSH access on port 2222.

Users are instructed to log in as root with the password “gnuhurdrox”, run /setup‑net.sh and restart SSH via /etc/init.d/sshd restart. The team also mentions scripts for building the image locally and plans for future releases, including automated builds, stage tarballs and x86‑64 parity.

While the port remains heavily experimental, the developers encourage contributions, warn of possible breakage and note that the image also works on real hardware.
