Police in Erie, Pennsylvania responded to reports of gunfire at a residence around 5 p.m. on Friday, discovering a mass shooting that left nine people dead, including children, and the suspected attacker also dead, the Guardian reported.

What happened

Witnesses said they saw a gun‑wielding individual outside the home before the shooter entered the property. Officers first found two women lying dead in the street with fatal gunshot wounds. The scene then escalated into a standoff as police and tactical teams surrounded the house. After hearing further gunshots from inside, officers entered and found seven additional victims, among them children, as well as the suspect, who investigators say died from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound.

What the reports add

The Guardian noted that Erie police chief Rick Lorah described the incident as one of the most distressing he had witnessed. He confirmed there was no ongoing public threat and expressed condolences to victims’ families. The city of Erie posted on social media that the shooter was dead and the immediate danger had passed, calling the event a "terrible tragedy".

What was said

Chief Lorah told reporters, "The loss of life is devastating and the circumstances we are working through are deeply disturbing," and added, "Our hearts are with the victims, their families and everyone affected by this tragedy." The city statement said, "We understand that the news brings deep shock and sorrow to our residents, and we want to assure the public that the situation has been contained."

How it came about

Authorities are still investigating motives. The Guardian cited figures from the Gun Violence Archive indicating this was at least the 19th mass murder of the year in the United States, part of more than 500 mass shootings recorded since January.
