AI‑written patient complaints strain NHS GP practices
The Medical Protection Society says AI‑crafted letters are lengthening and complicating patient complaints, affecting GP wellbeing.

Family doctors in England are receiving increasingly long, AI‑generated patient complaints, the Medical Protection Society (MPS) warned on Wednesday. A survey of nearly 160 practice managers found that only 7% have never seen such letters, while 45% say they are worsening workload pressures and staff morale.
What happened
The MPS, which provides legal and indemnity advice to health workers, said many of the AI‑drafted complaints run to 20 pages or more. The letters often contain detailed legal arguments, some of which are questionable, and frequently retain the AI tool’s “coaching” cues. Practice managers report that responding to these documents takes considerable time, diverting clinicians from patient care.
What the reports add
According to the Independent, the survey highlighted that the surge in AI‑generated complaints is prompting more GP practice staff to seek MPS support. The report also notes that the speed of AI tools allows patients to produce complaints in seconds, potentially lowering the threshold for filing grievances and encouraging “heat‑of‑the‑moment” submissions rather than using simpler resolution routes.
What was said
Dr Sarah Townley, deputy medical director at MPS, told the Independent: “AI can empower and support patients in communicating concerns – particularly if confidence, language barriers or health conditions make written communication difficult.” She added that “the benefit of being able to produce a complaint in a matter of seconds also appears to be having the effect of lowering the thresholds around what patients will complain about.”
How it came about
The rise of AI‑assisted writing tools has coincided with growing pressures on NHS general practices. Earlier Felo coverage has examined NHS staffing shortages and the impact of administrative burdens on clinician wellbeing. The current wave of AI‑generated complaints adds a new dimension to those challenges, as practices grapple with longer, more complex correspondence that can delay clinical work.
