Abu Dhabi authorities announced that cyclists and e‑scooter riders will be fined Dh500 for riding on pedestrian‑only walkways or other unauthorised areas, the Department of Municipalities and Transport said on Tuesday.

Acting Executive Director of the Planning and Strategic Affairs Sector at the Integrated Transport Centre, Abdulla Hamad Alaryani, explained that the penalty is applied under Administrative Decision No. 21 of 2022 and targets the rider, not pedestrians.

Alaryani noted a recent surge in bicycle and e‑scooter use for short trips, linking the rise to the need for dedicated routes that separate riders from walkers. He described how new cycling infrastructure is planned according to location characteristics, expected usage and purpose, incorporating safe surfaces, separation where needed, signage and protective measures at intersections.

The department reiterated that following designated routes is essential for the safety of cyclists, e‑scooter users and pedestrians across the emirate.
