US Issues Travel Advisory Over Saudi Airport Risks and Filming Ban

The advisory cites Houthi attacks, suspends Riyadh airport use and restricts US staff travel near the Yemen border.

By Felo News Desk · Published

The US Mission in Saudi Arabia released a security alert on October 18 warning American citizens of possible missile and drone attacks, airport closures and flight disruptions across the Kingdom. The advisory, issued by the US Embassy in Riyadh, said King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh remains suspended, while King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam operate with delays and cancellations.

Travelers are urged to monitor official alerts, check flight status directly with airlines and airports, and consider alternative transport such as private cars, trains or buses. Land border crossings, including the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain, and major highways around Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran are reported as operational.

US government employees in Saudi Arabia must obtain special authorisation to use King Khalid International Airport and are prohibited from travelling within 20 miles of the Yemen border. Additional authorisation is required for travel to the provinces of Jizan, Asir, Najran, Qatif, Yanbu and Taif.

The advisory references attacks by Iran‑backed Houthi forces on Saudi civilian airports and critical infrastructure, warning that hostilities could quickly escalate. It also reminds Americans that Saudi law bans filming, publishing or sharing images of missile and drone interceptions, noting that individuals have been detained for violating this rule.

Recommended precautions include following Saudi Civil Defence alerts, keeping mobile phones charged, staying away from windows and glass doors, and avoiding demonstrations or areas with heavy police presence.
