UN refugee agency officials warned on Tuesday that renewed fighting in Yemen could drive as many as 10,000 more people across the Red Sea to Djibouti and increase internal displacement to more than 230,000, according to Al Jazeera.
UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch told reporters in Geneva that over 3,000 Yemenis had already fled to Djibouti in recent days and that the agency is preparing for a surge once sea conditions improve in mid‑October. He said the agency and partners are planning for “more than 10,000 arrivals in Djibouti” in the coming months.
Baloch also noted that internal displacement within Yemen could rise from the current 130,000 to over 230,000 as the Iran‑aligned Houthi rebels continue their offensive along the Red Sea coastline, which has already left hundreds dead and disrupted global trade.
