Women protest illegal liquor sales in Odisha's Nabarangpur

Women from all 10 blocks rallied at Chauria Guda square, submitted a 10‑point charter and warned of sieges if demands are not met within 15 days.

Thousands of women from across Nabarangpur gathered on Thursday at Chauria Guda square in Odisha, staging a large‑scale protest against what they described as rampant illegal liquor sales.

The demonstrators, representing villages and panchayats from all ten blocks, marched to the district collector’s office after raising slogans and submitting a 10‑point charter that calls for the closure of unauthorised outlets, strict action against traders and a time‑bound drive to stop illicit sales.

According to the New Indian Express, the women allege that the unchecked sale of country‑made and foreign liquor has heightened domestic disputes, verbal abuse and threats against women, and has caused broader social and economic distress. They claim liquor is being sold openly at roadside eateries and betel shops, targeting labourers, economically weaker sections and young people.

The protest was attended by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders Dabugam MLA and district BJD president Manohar Randhari, former MP Pradeep Majhi and district Congress president Lipika Majhi. The agitators warned that if concrete steps are not taken within 15 days, they will intensify their protest by laying siege to police stations across the blocks.
