A former Tigray leader now advising Ethiopia’s prime minister, Getachew Reda, promised a “visible change” in the region on Sunday after government‑aligned forces retook Mekelle city.
What happened
Government‑aligned units entered Mekelle on 3 October, ending rebel control that began when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front seized the airport on 23 September. Ethiopian Airlines resumed flights to Mekelle on Sunday, the first commercial service since the rebels’ seizure.
What was said
Reda told supporters at Mekelle airport, “I would like to assure you on this occasion that we will bring visible change, a change beyond mere hope,” as reported by the Independent. He did not elaborate further.
How it came about
The recapture follows renewed fighting that has weakened the 2022 peace agreement and heightened tensions with Eritrea. Earlier this week, Ethiopian police and federal forces deployed in Mekelle after the TPLF announced its withdrawal, and drone strikes were reported against alleged Eritrean troops in the region.
