Viking has taken delivery of its tenth Nile‑focused river cruise ship, the Viking Sekhmet, at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, the Independent reported.
What happened
The 236‑foot vessel, named after the ancient goddess Sekhmet, can accommodate 82 passengers in 41 cabins. It will join Viking’s existing Nile fleet, which includes the Viking Osiris and Viking Aton.
What the reports add
According to the article, the Sekhmet will operate two 12‑day itineraries beginning in 2027: the established "Pharaohs & Pyramids" route and a new "Total Eclipse" cruise. Both tours start with a three‑night hotel stay in Cairo, followed by a flight to Luxor and an eight‑day round‑trip cruise that visits sites such as the Great Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, the High Dam and a Nubian village.
What was said
Leah Talactac, president and chief executive of Viking, said: “The Nile has connected people with the history and culture of Egypt for thousands of years, and it continues to be a destination that inspires curious travellers. With the arrival of the elegant Viking Sekhmet, we are pleased to offer even more opportunities for curious travellers to explore Egypt in Viking comfort.”
How it came about
Viking’s expansion follows a broader growth plan that aims to add 19 river ships by 2028, 11 ocean ships by 2032 and two expedition vessels by 2031.
