Oscar‑winning actor Tilda Swinton will publish her first book, a memoir titled “Material Evidence,” the publisher Farrar, Straus and Giroux announced on Instagram. The memoir is slated for release in the fall of 2028, according to the publisher’s statement.
FSG describes the work as rejecting conventional memoir structure, instead moving “object by object” – from a christening dress to a wooden leg, a sweatshirt, a length of embroidery silk and a photograph – to mirror the associative nature of memory. The publisher’s press release says the format reflects how memory works, emphasizing sensory and associative links rather than a linear timeline.
Swinton, 65, said the book is “a trail of breadcrumbs through the forest” and an “essay in wonder” that she hopes will leave readers feeling “affirmed and recharged with energy.” She adds that the work explores the “elusive spirit” each person uniquely constitutes and the “solid matter” that remains constant.
FSG president and publisher Mitzi Angel, who will edit the memoir, praised Swinton’s “unique way of seeing things” and said the objects she contemplates “vibrate with meaning and memory.” Angel expressed delight at Swinton joining FSG with “an extraordinarily unusual and moving book.”
