New Study Says Earth’s Climate Health Deteriorates as El Niño Looms

Researchers say seven climate indicators are at unprecedented levels and a strong El Niño may amplify heat and drought worldwide.

Oregon State University researcher Bill Ripple, lead author of a new BioScience paper, says Earth’s climate condition is “serious and getting worse,” with seven of sixteen planetary vital signs at record extremes, according to Wired.

What happened

The study, published on Wednesday, documents that atmospheric carbon dioxide is 50 % higher than pre‑industrial levels and that Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have shrunk to historic lows. Ocean heat content has reached record highs, and the rate of global warming has accelerated from about 0.05 °C per decade (1880‑1970) to 0.36 °C per decade since 2010. While the global average temperature is not yet a record, the report warns that a strengthening El Niño could push it higher before year‑end.

What the reports add

Wired notes that the paper links the natural El Niño cycle—characterized by a hotter‑than‑normal Pacific Ocean—to amplified global heat because it occurs on a much warmer planet. The article also highlights that coral reefs face mass bleaching and that the Amazon rainforest could approach a tipping point toward savanna‑like conditions, especially as El Niño brings drier weather.

What was said

“If Earth were a patient coming in for an annual physical, I would say its condition is serious and getting worse,” Ripple told Wired.
“A strong El Niño could temporarily push global temperatures even higher, while bringing additional heat and drought to vulnerable regions,” Ripple added.

How it came about

The paper builds on a series of recent climate assessments, including NOAA’s forecast of an unprecedented “Super El Niño” and earlier Felo News coverage of climate‑related health impacts and extreme weather trends. The new findings reinforce concerns raised in Felo’s October 11 report on the projected strength of the current El Niño.
