Stellantis workers start strike‑mandate vote as bargaining stalls

Unifor will announce the vote results on Monday after a two‑day ballot.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Stellantis workers in Canada began a two‑day vote on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, to decide whether to give their union a strike mandate, as collective‑bargaining negotiations remain stalled, the Canadian Press reported.

The vote will close on Sunday, with Unifor set to release the outcome on Monday. Unifor says a strike remains a last resort while it still hopes for a negotiated deal.

The dispute follows Stellantis' announcement that it plans to sell its idled Brampton, Ont., assembly plant to defence contractor Roshel. Stellantis says market and trade conditions hurt the business case for keeping the plant, but the sale could support future jobs. More than 2,000 workers were laid off when the plant halted operations in 2023, and production of the Jeep Compass was moved to Illinois.
