Indian Sensex falls over 500 points as oil prices rise and Fed outlook looms

Elevated crude prices and anticipation of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision pressured Indian equities on Monday.

On Monday, the BSE Sensex slipped 536.30 points to 72,583.86 in early trade, while the NSE Nifty fell 200.10 points to 22,402.80, according to New Indian Express.

The decline came as Brent crude traded 2.14% lower at $114.2 per barrel, but market sentiment remained strained by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the upcoming US Federal Reserve meeting slated for Oct. 27‑28.

Among the 30 Sensex constituents, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finance, Hindustan Unilever, Infosys, Bajaj Finserv and Reliance Industries were the biggest laggards. In contrast, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Sun Pharma, Adani Ports and Axis Bank posted gains.

Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, warned that "Indian equities are likely to remain under pressure" due to the oil‑price backdrop and Fed uncertainty, and added that investors will watch for any hawkish tone from the central bank.
