Pick n Pay announced on Thursday that its Smart Shopper loyalty programme now includes a paid tier, Smart Shopper Pro, priced at R99 per month at launch. The move places the retailer in direct competition with Checkers’ Xtra Savings Plus, which also costs R99.
What happened
Smart Shopper Pro gives members unlimited free deliveries on asap! orders over R350, triple Smart Shopper points on fresh groceries, double points on BP fuel and an extra 10% off in‑store purchases, capped at R200 per month. The subscription is purchased through the asap! app, while the standard Smart Shopper tier remains free. Pick n Pay did not disclose the future price after the launch period or the exact date the promotional price ends.
What the reports add
TechCentral noted that the 10% discount applies to a maximum spend of R2 000 per month in a single shop, limiting its reach across multiple stores. BizCommunity highlighted that the subscription bundles grocery, clothing and fuel spending under one rewards structure, and that where the Pro benefits overlap with the free Live Well Club, members can earn up to six times the normal points on qualifying items such as fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and chicken.
What was said
"For customers ordering groceries online weekly, four deliveries a month would be worth R148 in delivery fees alone," Pick n Pay said in its announcement. Vince Viviers, executive of innovation at Pick n Pay, told TechCentral, "Customers are increasingly looking for practical ways to make their money go further."
How it came about
The launch follows a broader trend among South African supermarkets to monetize loyalty programmes. Checkers introduced its Xtra Savings Plus tier in 2023, offering similar unlimited deliveries and a 10% in‑store discount capped at R200. Earlier this year Checkers also rolled out the Stickables campaign, a gamified loyalty initiative that rewards shoppers with collectible stickers for every R200 spent (see Felo coverage). Pick n Pay’s new tier expands on its existing free Smart Shopper benefits and aligns with the retailer’s Live Well Club, which already provides triple points and cash‑off vouchers on healthier‑choice products.
