AstraZeneca unveils three‑year plan to cut £1.1bn annually

The London‑listed group says the overhaul will cost up to $2 bn in restructuring charges but will not shrink headcount.

AstraZeneca announced on Monday a three‑year restructuring programme aimed at saving $1.5 bn (£1.1 bn) a year, according to statements from the company.

What happened

The overhaul is expected to incur up to $2 bn (£1.5 bn) in restructuring costs over the next three years. The company did not specify which divisions will deliver the savings and gave no firm answer on job cuts.

What the reports add

Both Standard and The Independent noted that the plan is “widespread”, affecting multiple sites rather than a single unit. AstraZeneca employs roughly 100,000 people worldwide, about 10,000 of whom work in the UK, with headquarters in Cambridge and additional R&D and manufacturing facilities in Macclesfield, London and Speke, Liverpool. The programme, dubbed “reshaping for sustainable growth”, will embed new technologies across processes and redeploy resources across existing business and therapy areas.

  • Pre‑tax profit for the third quarter rose 22 % to $3.96 bn (£2.9 bn).
  • Operating profit also climbed 22 % to $4.39 bn (£3.21 bn).
  • Shares jumped about 6 % to roughly £138 after the results.

What was said

“Overall we do expect that the company will continue to grow, we are not expecting to shrink the headcount,” CFO Aradhana Sarin told the outlets.
“It is a reshaping programme so there will be areas where we are upskilling employees, reskilling employees, hiring new people, skills and new technology areas, and there will also be areas where we are reducing slightly or reorganising slightly.”
“There’ll be elements of incorporating technology within all our processes,” Sarin added.
Chief executive Pascal Soriot said, “With multiple potential blockbuster assets in late‑stage development and transformative technologies scaling rapidly, we are on track to deliver our 2030 ambition and to sustain growth through the next decade.”

How it came about

The announcement follows a wave of cost‑cutting initiatives across UK‑based firms, such as Close Brothers’ £60 m AI‑driven savings drive in September and NatWest’s £420 m cost‑saving plan announced earlier this month. AstraZeneca’s move reflects a broader industry trend of trimming expenses to free capital for pipeline investment.
