Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Warring is expected to step down after the party high command informed him of a decision to replace him, party sources said on Oct. 1.
Former minister and MP Vijay Inder Singla, a Hindu face and Congress Working Committee member, has emerged as the frontrunner for the state chief position ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Singla was appointed chairperson of the party's election‑management and coordination committee on July 1, and his name joins a shortlist that includes former Olympian Pargat Singh, former MLA Rana KP Singh, MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
The move follows weeks of infighting within the Punjab unit. After the high command retained Warring on July 1 and named former chief minister Channi as chair of the campaign committee, a faction led by Channi pushed for Warring’s removal and demanded Channi be declared the party’s chief‑ministerial face for the 2027 polls.
Senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, K C Venugopal and Sachin Pilot discussed the leadership change in a recent meeting, according to the source.
