Pentagon documents outline plan for agentic AI tool ECHOTRIBBLE

The Army’s ECHOTRIBBLE program held a virtual assessment that produced dozens of whitepapers, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has pledged an AI‑first warfighting force.

Documents released by the Intercept and posted on the Cyber Fusion Innovation Center website describe the Pentagon’s effort to create an agentic AI framework called ECHOTRIBBLE, intended for navigating infrastructure and neutralizing threats.

The Army Central Command is reportedly seeking private‑sector partners to help weaponize the technology, though no operational AI‑powered hacking tools have been confirmed. A fully virtual assessment event earlier this month generated 65 whitepapers, with five selected for presentation to an Assessment Team.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said in a January press release that the department will "unleash experimentation, eliminate bureaucratic barriers, focus our investments and demonstrate the execution approach needed to ensure we lead in military AI," adding the goal to become an "AI‑first" warfighting force.

Critics warn that autonomous systems tasked with "neutralizing threats" could behave unpredictably. University of Montreal professor David Krueger told the Intercept that such mandates are "incredibly dangerous" given known failure modes of current AI paradigms.
