U.S. DHS extends Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainians and Sudanese

DHS announced that TPS protections for tens of thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of Sudanese will remain in place for now.

Immigrants from Ukraine and Sudan enrolled in the United States' Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program will continue to live and work in the country without fear of deportation, the Department of Homeland Security said on Sunday, even though the programs were slated to end on Monday.

DHS stated that final decisions on the fate of the humanitarian immigration programs will "be made at the appropriate time" and that, until such announcements, nationals of Ukraine and Sudan enrolled in TPS will "retain protection."

The TPS protections for tens of thousands of Ukrainians and roughly 1,800 Sudanese were officially scheduled to terminate on Monday, but the agency chose to keep them in place temporarily. The agency contrasted this move with the Trump administration's broader approach, which had revoked TPS for more than 1 million immigrants from over a dozen countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti and Venezuela.

TPS, created by Congress in 1990, offers a temporary reprieve from deportation and work authorization to immigrants from countries experiencing armed conflict, environmental disaster or other crises. The Biden administration first announced TPS for Ukrainians in spring 2022 after Russia's invasion, and as of March 2025 more than 100,000 Ukrainians were enrolled. Sudan's TPS, in place since the late 1990s, covered roughly 1,800 nationals as of the same date.
