US Defence Secretary Hegseth to cut up to 20% of senior military posts

The proposal will be detailed in Hegseth’s State of the Force address at Quantico.

By Felo News Desk · Published

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to announce a plan that could cut up to 20% of top‑level military billets, affecting one‑ to four‑star generals and admirals, according to US officials speaking to Reuters.

The cuts, which would double the minimum 10% reduction ordered last year, may involve downgrading some positions or eliminating them entirely. A Pentagon count showed 851 active‑duty generals and admirals in July, just below the statutory cap of 857.

Hegseth is expected to outline the restructuring during his State of the Force address on Wednesday at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. The move comes as the United States enters its seventh month of war with Iran.
