Comedian Paul Whitehouse, 68, was attacked by a mugger at a cash point on Essex Road in Islington, north London, while buying medication for his wife, Dr Mine Conkbayir, on the weekend, according to the couple’s Instagram post.

What happened

Whitehouse went to a cash point beside a Sainsbury's Local to pick up medication after his wife experienced a bad reaction to a treatment. While at the machine, a mugger seized his bank card. Whitehouse fought back, retrieved the card and the perpetrator fled the scene empty‑handed.

What the reports add

Both the Independent and the Evening Standard reported that Whitehouse’s wife, Dr Conkbayir, posted about the incident on Instagram, describing it as a “horrid start to the weekend.” The Independent noted that the couple had just taken their daughter to football before the attack, while the Standard specified the location as the cash point beside the Sainsbury's Local on Essex Road.

What was said

Dr Mine Conkbayir wrote on Instagram, “Well, a horrid start to the weekend would be an understatement… He was mugged on Essex Road (Islington) – at the cashpoint beside the Sainsbury's Local. He did fight back and retrieved his card, with the perp scuttling away empty‑handed. But that’s not the point, is it.” She added a plea for the public to stay “super vigilant” when out on the streets.

How it came about

The incident followed a weekend in which the family had taken their daughter to a football match. Earlier this week, Whitehouse has been appearing on the fishing show “Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.” No police statements have been published yet.
