Patrick Droney, the Brooklyn‑based singer‑songwriter, told Rolling Stone in a Zoom interview that his 2026 album Made You Look grew out of a desire to document the present, after a period of personal change that included becoming a father.

What happened

Following the release of his 2023 album Subtitles for Feelings, Droney bought a large cinema camera and began shooting everyday scenes around New York – from commuters on the subway to a woman reading a newspaper on a bench. He says the footage helped him “get altitude again” and informed the sound and lyrics of Made You Look. The record features a duet with Kelsea Ballerini titled “Math of Us” and includes tracks such as “Cigarette Break” and the title track, which reference fleeting moments and fading memories.

What the reports add

Rolling Stone notes that Droney likens his camera‑driven explorations to “reading letters from dead poets,” and that he sees the album as an act of rebellion against the rapid‑fire attention economy, even mentioning that “a minute is now 45 seconds” because “the atomic clock has shifted.” He also points out that the songs were recorded in varied spaces – attics, garden apartments and traditional studios – blending old‑school techniques with modern technology.

What was said

During the interview Droney said, “I thought I was in an answer moment with that record, but you know it was just a strange way to land a plane and know that I needed to get back on the ground to get altitude again.” He added, “There was no posturing of figuring out the past or being in a future that I don’t know yet… Right now, I just want to document this beautiful moment in my life, and I’m grateful for that chance to do that.” The singer also remarked, “What got me altitude for the new record is just real life. It wasn’t music. It was just life happening to me.”

How it came about

Droney’s earlier work, including the self‑titled EP featuring the song “Brooklyn” and the 2021 post‑pandemic album State of the Heart, already explored city life and personal grief. The pandemic‑era releases dealt with a decade of loss and time, but with Made You Look he shifts focus to the immediate present, using his camera as a tool to capture “still frames” of everyday existence.
