Australia’s capital city will host the acclaimed Paddington The Musical for an exclusive 10‑week run beginning in September 2027, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The production, which opened on the West End in November 2025, will be staged at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre and is the first Australian city to present the show.
NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper called securing the musical a “fantastic coup”. Co‑producers Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley said the show was intended only for cities that can match the ambition and scale of the London production. Australian producer Suzanne Jones, chief executive of Jones Theatrical Group, expressed pride that Sydney will be the first Australian venue.
The musical adapts Michael Bond’s 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington and follows the beloved bear’s journey from Peru to London. It features a realistic animatronic bear puppet, a feature praised since its West End debut, where it earned seven Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Best Director for Luke Sheppard. The show has already sold out its London run and will open on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in March 2027, six months before the Sydney dates.
Destination NSW, through the Minns government, secured the Sydney run and expects the production to attract more than 100,000 visitors and inject over $64 million into the state economy. Tickets are available via a wait‑list, and the production will be the third city worldwide to host the animatronic bear on stage.
