Sacha Baron Cohen is set to star in Quentin Tarantino’s first stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, which will open at London’s Phoenix Theatre on 18 March 2027, according to the BBC.

What happened

The play, described as a "rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise" set in 1830s Europe, was announced earlier this year. Tickets go on sale on Monday, starting at £25. The full cast has not yet been revealed.

What the reports add

The BBC notes that the production is co‑produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, the latter known for hits such as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Tarantino, who plans to retire from film after ten movies, will also direct the stage version.

What was said

Baron Cohen told the BBC he was "beyond delighted" to work with Tarantino, adding: "When the best director in the world calls, you don't ask questions." Tarantino said on the Church of Tarantino podcast that he is "keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out" and that the project will take "a year and a half to two years of my life".

How it came about

The play was first revealed by Tarantino last summer on his podcast, where he said it was "all written" and that he would begin work in January. He also mentioned the possibility of moving to England with his family while the production is running.
