Nepal army helicopters deliver aid and evacuate residents after flash flood

Military helicopters and ground crews supplied relief to villages along the Budhi Gandaki river after a landslide‑triggered flash flood left five people missing.

Rescuers from Nepal's military reached villages along the Budhi Gandaki river on Monday, a day after a flash flood caused by a landslide blocked the river near Chumchure, the Associated Press reported.

Helicopters delivered food, tents, medicine and other relief items to remote mountain settlements while soldiers evacuated residents and tourists from the affected area. The Nepal Army said five people have been reported missing, but no fatalities have been confirmed.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority noted that an early warning system allowed most people to move to higher ground before the flood struck. So far, 95 people, including nine foreigners, have been taken to nearby towns for shelter.

Damage assessments indicated that the landslide destroyed five bridges, halted construction at three hydropower sites and swept away dozens of houses and farms. Trucks continue to transport supplies to locations reachable by road, while helicopters focus on villages inaccessible by land.

Videos posted on social media show the swollen Budhi Gandaki River rushing between steep mountains, carrying away sheds and homes. The river later merges with the Trishuli River, a key waterway near Kathmandu.
