Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a Mahalaya greeting on X on Saturday, October 10, 2026, seeking the blessings of Goddess Durga for happiness, compassion, hope, peace and prosperity. The message read, "Shubho Mahalaya! We seek the blessings of Maa Durga. May the blessings fill our society with happiness, compassion and hope. May there be peace and prosperity all around," and was also shared in Bengali.

Mahalaya, which ends the Pitri Paksha period of ancestor homage, signals the start of Devi Paksha and the countdown to Durga Puja. Devotees in West Bengal and other eastern states traditionally listen to the "Mahishasura Mardini" programme and perform tarpan rituals. This year, Mahalaya falls on October 10, followed by Sharad Navratri on October 11 and the Vijayadashami finale on October 20.
